"Saving Lives through Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene”

Although access to drinking water and sanitation has been recognized as a human right since 2010, in Uganda, the lack of access to improved water supplies is a huge problem in rural and slum areas of Uganda, with more than 80 percent of all diseases being attributed to dirty water and poor sanitation.

In rural and slum parts of the country, where Ignite Africa focuses its efforts, just one in three people have access to clean water, while just 13 percent have access to adequate sanitation services.

The main traditional sources of water in this part of rural Uganda are small ponds and unprotected wells, both of which are easily polluted, causing disease and ill-health. Unsafe sanitation practices and the spread of preventable diseases are a large part of Uganda’s water crisis.

Therefore, as we all know, proper water and sanitation is a key foundation for achieving many of the other Sustainable Development Goals, including good health and gender equality, so we can’t get very far on the 2030 Agenda without it.

Our water, sanitation, and hygiene efforts are part of a full plan that addresses the many factors that perpetuate poverty. Water is foundational, but we don’t stop there. Our long-term, comprehensive model also works to ensure sustainable improvements in health, education, economic development, and food and agriculture production. Mshikamano Foundation works with partners to supplement Government services by constructing Boreholes, shallow wells, spring tanks, rainwater harvesting facilities, schools, household and community sanitation facilities.
